Before you call

What happens when you reach us

The first conversation is short and it is mostly us asking questions. Which room, and how old is the house. What is failing now, or is this a look you want changed. Is there any sign of water where water should not be, like a soft spot in the floor by the tub or a stain on a ceiling below a second floor bath. We ask whether the tile is already picked out or still open, because that changes the setting materials and sometimes the prep. We ask about the plumbing fixtures too. A shower valve that is getting replaced has to be handled before any board goes up. Ten minutes on the phone usually tells us whether this is a same week look or a bigger conversation. Nobody is trying to close you on that call.

A few things make the visit far more useful, so gather them if you can. Rough measurements of the room help, even paced off. Photos help more, especially of the failure itself and of the room from the doorway. If you have the tile picked, the size and the material matter more than the color. A porcelain plank two feet long and a small glass mosaic need very different prep. If the house is older, the age is worth knowing, since floor tile and black mastic from before the early eighties can hold asbestos and that gets tested rather than guessed at. Last, think about your calendar. If you have a stretch when the room can be out of service, say so early. It usually moves you up rather than back.

After we walk the room, you get a written scope inside a couple of days. It lists what we take out, what we prep, what waterproofing goes in, what we set, and what we leave for another trade. That last part matters. If a plumber has to move a drain or an electrician has to add a circuit for a heated mat, we name it instead of burying it. Tile lead times vary, so if the material is coming from a supply house we tell you what to expect and we ask you to order extra for cuts and for future repairs. Once material is in hand and the calendar lines up, we set a start date and hold it. If weather or a delivery slips the date, you hear it from us the day we know, not the morning we were supposed to show.

Access is simple to sort out ahead of time. We need a spot for the wet saw, usually the driveway or the garage, and a hose bib or a bucket setup for water. We need a clear path from that spot to the room, and we cover it. Water gets shut off for parts of the job, and we tell you which hours so nobody is surprised at dinner. Pets are fine as long as they are behind a door while doors are open and blades are running. Most homeowners give us a code or a key and go to work, and that is fine with us. Winter changes one thing only. Boots come off or covers go on, and we keep salt and slush out of the finished part of the house.

Once the tile is set, the room needs a little patience before it goes back to normal. Mortar and grout cure on their own schedule, and in a cool basement bathroom that takes longer than in a warm upstairs one. We tell you the exact hours to stay off a floor and to keep a shower dry. Cement grout usually wants sealing after it cures, and we walk you through how to do it or we handle it. For the first few weeks, clean with plain water or a mild cleaner rather than anything acidic, which eats at grout and can etch natural stone. A haze that shows up after the first shower is normal and wipes off. One more thing about winter here. If the job is an entry or a mudroom floor, give the grout its full cure before boots and road salt start crossing it.

We would rather hear from you than not. If a grout line looks off, if a piece sounds hollow when you tap it, or if something moved that should not have, call us and we come back and look at it. We do not treat that as a complaint. Tile is a trade where the truth shows up over time, and a crew that hides from the phone in month three was never worth hiring in month one. We work in Sterling Heights and the towns around it, so coming back is a short drive rather than a production. Keep our number in your phone even after the job is done, because the next question, whether it is about a cleaner or a cracked piece in another room, gets a straight answer.
